Doing a consultation on a client is very important because without doing a consultation you wont know the main aspects you need to know to get a certain look and wont know what types of products to use on them.

First you need to decided what type of skin they have...
Normal-smooth skin, balance of oil and moisture, infrequent blemishes
Combination-Smooth skin, oily t-zone and dryness on outer edges of face
oily large pores and shiny finish
Sensitive-Redness and allergic reactions
Dry-Small pores and dull finish, little or no oil or shine

What types of products do they use on them selfs?
What Type of makeup do they normally wear?
How often do they wear makeup?
What type of makeup look are you aiming for?
Are they allergic to any makeup products or do they have any skin allergies?
Do they wear contact lenses because need to be careful around the eyes if so?
Also need to ask them if there is anything else they would like to inform you about.

These questions are very important so that you can do your job effectively and professionally because for example if they are not used to wearing a lot of makeup and then the makeup artist does a full coverage look on the client they will probity not like it unless they have told you thats what they want. 

You also need to make sure your professional by wearing all black, no heavy makeup, fresh breath and not over doing it with perfume. 
Also need to make sure that health and safety measures have been taken before starting anyones makeup.
